Make the morning just a little easier with these back to school lunch & snack ideas!
It’s almost that time again where our children head back to school. You know that means – serious lunch planning so that they’re not always eating the same meals or snacks!
As the summer continues to fly by with the last few weeks ahead of us, we wanted to share ways your children can enjoy the nuttiness of nut butters without the nuts! In case you didn’t know, Soom tahini products are delicious alternatives to nut butters and chocolate nut spreads on the market, and they are school-safe options for your children’s lunches. Many of these lunch options can be made ahead of time or prepared beforehand, making assembly extremely easy right before you send them off to school.
Not only are our products nut-free, but they are also dairy-free, oil-free, gluten-free, and vegan. Plus, they’re packed with nutrients your children may not necessarily be receiving including plant-based protein, calcium, and iron. These essential nutrients are typically consumed via animal products, so if you’re looking for an easy and perhaps vegan way to add these vitamins and minerals to your children’s diets, we highly recommend adding at least 2 tablespoons of our products into their daily meals.

If you’re upset you can no longer send your child to school with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, we have a runner-up to that – a tahini and jam or honey sandwich! It is so simple and absolutely delicious – both kids and parents eat this take on the classic all the time. Simply spread some tahini on one side of toast and jam, jelly, or honey on the other, and your work here is done!
You can also make a chocolate tahini sandwich with bananas. If you’re feeling extra sweet, you can also add a marshmallow spread for the ultimate sandwich. Also, if your child is gluten-free, you can also spread Soom Chocolate Tahini on a rice cake or two (this also makes for a great snack!).
Have you ever sent your children to school with turkey sandwiches? Rather than including mayo with the protein, consider spreading this easy tahini condiment on top. It’s free of oil and egg yolks, and adds more protein to your children’s lunch!
Dips & Spreads
We’re sure you have guessed this one… hummus! Hummus is an incredible lunch option as it’s packed with nutrients and vitamins and will fill your children up. Serve it with some pita bread, pita chips, crackers, or veggies, and it’ll be devoured in no time. Another lunch idea is a pea dip made with tahini. This dip can be eaten with veggies like carrots, celery, red peppers, and cucumbers, or crackers, too. You can also use it as a spread for a chicken sandwich.
If you’re looking to add avocado to your children’s meals, consider making this avocado and tahini dip. This is a delicious component for a turkey or chicken sandwich and can also be enjoyed with tortilla chips. Have you sent your children to school with pasta before? We have and continuously do so, as we typically have pasta from the night before leftover.
Occasionally we’ll combine marinara sauce with some tahini to create a tomato and tahini “cream” sauce. The tahini adds that creamy factor we tend to love all the while adding calcium, protein, and iron into this dish.
If you’re looking for a different sauce for your children’s pasta lunch, we highly recommend making this nut-free tahini pesto. Made with a few simple ingredients, this pesto will elevate the pasta or even a piece of salmon or chicken!
Here’s where the true fun begins.
Have you ever packed your children’s lunches with an apple or some other kind of fruit, and find yourself reaching for a nut butter to pair with that fruit? Unfortunately, as you know, you are no longer able to send your children to school with this traditional pairing. However, no need to fret because we have a great alternative for that – and that’s our Chocolate Tahini. You can dip strawberries, bananas, peaches, apples, and other fruits into Soom Chocolate Tahini! You can also dip apple chips, pretzels, or similar snacks into our Chocolate Tahini, too.
A sweet treat you can make for your kiddos (and yourself) are these grain-free brownies. Made with coconut sugar, maple syrup, 1 tbsp of coconut flour, and a few other natural ingredients, these brownies are fudgy, rich, and incredibly delicious without most of the refined sugars and enriched flours typically brownies consist of!
If you’re looking for a simple and healthy chocolate snack or dessert, this date-sweetened dark chocolate hummus dip is definitely a great go-to. Created by Lauren at Flora & Vino, this dip is ever so slightly sweet. It pairs perfectly with apple chips, fresh fruit, or pretzels, or as a spread on toast.
Also, our Chocolate Tahini Chewy Cookies are easy-to-make and will keep your children coming back for more of this guiltless indulgence.
We also recommend reinventing your Rice Krispie Treats with this vegan, chocolatey and nutritious recipe! They’re vegan, call for 4 simple ingredients (brown rice cereal, coconut oil, coconut sugar, and Soom Chocolate Tahini), and are super easy to make. All you’ll need to do is prep these in advance since they’ll need some time to set.
You might be thinking, “These are all great options, but how can I incorporate regular tahini into snacks?” We have some delicious suggestions for you.
Tahini and granola pair beautifully. Whether it’s chunky nutless granola for a yogurt parfait (substitute regular tahini for chocolate tahini), coconut tahini granola, or a chocolate drizzled granola bars filled with nutrient-packed seeds, we’re sure those linked recipes will shine some light as to how to incorporate tahini into your homemade granola treats.
