We get quite a few questions regarding tahini, where Soom’s products are manufactured, and additional inquiries related to the qualities of Soom Tahini. To make it easier for our readers to find, we decided to capture this information in a blog post.
Please take a look at our FAQs below, or visit our FAQ page.
What is tahini?
Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds. It is commonly used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, and is a versatile ingredient for savory and sweet dishes.
Is your tahini raw?
No, our sesame seeds are roasted before they are pressed.
Soom Tahini is just sesame, no added salt or oil.
What is silan?
Silan is a syrup made from dates. Soom Silan is an all-natural date syrup made from 100% steamed and pressed dates. There are no additional sugars, preservatives, or colors added to our silan.
Can you please list the ingredients in Soom’s products?
Soom Premium Tahini: 100% roasted and pressed Ethiopian White Humera sesame seeds. That’s it! No added oils.
Soom Organic Tahini: 100% roasted and pressed Organic Ethiopian White Humera sesame seeds. That’s it! No added oils.
Soom Chocolate Sweet Tahini: Soom Tahini, powdered cane sugar, and cocoa powder.
Soom Silan Date Syrup: 100% steamed and pressed dates.
Is Soom tahini made with hulled or with whole/unhulled sesame seeds?
Soom Tahini is made with mechanically-hulled sesame seeds.
Where are your sesame seeds from?
Our sesame seeds are from the northwest, Humera, region of Ethiopia. They are called White Humera Sesame.
Where are your dates from?
Our dates are from Israel, primarily the Jordan Valley.
Where is Soom Tahini manufactured?
Where is Soom Silan manufactured?
Are Soom products manufactured in a shared facility with shared equipment where nuts are handled?
Our tahini is made on separate equipment in a separate room, in a facility that also processes tree nuts. Cross-contamination is highly unlikely, but because tree nuts are on site, we will let you make the call as to what is best for you and your family and friends. Please review our Allergen Statement.
Other than the organic certification, is there any difference between Soom’s Premium and Organic tahinis?
Our premium and organic tahini are both made with White Humera Ethiopian sesame seeds, and manufactured using the same process. The flavor is exactly the same! The only difference between these two products is the certification.
Are Soom products certified kosher?
Yes, both our organic and premium tahini products (16 oz.) are OU, and our premium tahini and chocolate sweet tahini halva spread (11 oz.) are OK. Further, Soom Tahini is pressed in Israel under OU supervision and is under OK supervision in Massachusetts. Soom Silan is certified OK, too.
Are Soom products gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and nut-free?
Yes, all of Soom products are gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, peanut-free, and vegan. As far as other nuts go, our tahini is made on separate equipment in a separate room, in a facility that also processes tree nuts. Cross-contamination is highly unlikely, but because tree nuts are on site, we will let you make the call as to what is best for you and your family and friends.
Is the plastic that Soom uses BPA-free?
Yes, all of Soom’s plastic is BPA-free.
How should I store Soom Products?
Depending on the preferred consistency, you can keep Soom Tahini and Chocolate Soom either in the pantry for a smoother and more pourable texture. However, if you prefer a peanut butter-like consistency, place Soom Tahini and Chocolate Soom in the fridge. Never place a wet or dirty spoon in the jar. Store Soom Silan in the pantry.
How long is Soom Tahini good for?
Soom Tahini products have an 18-month expiration date from the day the tahini was pressed, but we recommend using the product up within the first 12 months.
How long is Soom Silan good for?
Soom Silan has an 18-month expiration date from the day the silan was pressed, but we recommend using the product up within the first 12 months.
How do I read the expiration date on the tahini bottles?
A bottle may have an expiration date of 18/1/20, which means it’s good until January 18th, 2020.
I noticed Soom Tahini is smoother and more runny than other tahini I’ve tried. Is this how it’s supposed to be?
Soom tends to be thinner than a lot of other tahini on the market. The ratio of the sesame oil to the sesame “meat” makes it a creamy, pourable consistency. Also, depending on temperature, the tahini may feel a bit thinner or thicker. It should settle in a cool, dry place such as in a pantry. However, many people prefer to keep it in the fridge.
I noticed dark “specks” in my Soom Tahini. Is this normal?
These dark specks are totally natural. As an agricultural product, no two seeds of sesame are the same. The black spots are just part of the hull. It is 100% okay to eat.
I noticed white “specks” in my Soom Chocolate Sweet Tahini. Is this normal?
During the winter season, the fat and sugar content crystallizes forming these white chunks or specks. These chunks occur because we do not add emulsifiers to our products. The product is still 100% okay to eat.
I have a fairly old jar of tahini that hasn’t expired yet and it’s difficult to reblend with a spoon. What do I do?
If the tahini separates and is hard to re-emulsify, we recommend storing the jar upside down (of course, make sure the lid is screwed on tightly). The oil trickles down back into the paste, making it better emulsified.
My jar of chocolate tahini is separated and hard to stir and reblend. Any recommendations to re-emulsify?
If the chocolate tahini separates and becomes hard to stir, prepare a warm bath for the jar. Simply place warm-to-hot water in a bowl and place the jar of chocolate tahini with the lid screwed tightly into the warm water. Make sure that no water enters the jar as it will compromise the product. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. The product will be much easier to stir.

The package I received is leaking. What should I do?
Thanks for letting us know about the leak. Sesame oil is reluctant, and occasionally breaks through – especially in the summer and with not so careful handling from our shipping carriers. The oil leakage poses no threat to the contents of the tahini inside! Tahini is shelf stable, even once opened. It can be stored in the pantry. However, we don’t want you to be disappointed with your purchasing experience. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll make it right by you.
My package hasn’t arrived. What should I do?
