How to Use Soom Silan

Similarly to tahini, there are endless ways to use Soom Silan.  It works beautifully in savory dishes and adds richness and sweetness to baked goods.

This ingredient really can be incorporated into every single meal of the day – breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, dinner, dessert, late night snack, beverages.  You get the point.

Let’s take a deep dive into some of the various ways we suggest using Soom Silan.

Breakfast:

  • Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast:
    • Enjoy drizzling a teaspoon (or more) of Soom Silan onto your pancakes, waffles, or challah French toast! Move over maple syrup, it’s Soom Silan’s chance to shine. You should check out James Beard Award Winner Zach Engel and his recipe for Challah French Toast Recipe with a Tahini and Silan Swirl that he shared with us.
  • Oatmeal, Granola, and Yogurt Bowls or Parfaits:
    • You can cook silan into your oatmeal or granola, but just imagine it drizzled on top for a second. The sweetness and richness of the dates really come through and add delight to your taste buds. We absolutely love drizzling our yogurt bowls (mixed with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit) with silan. It really ties all of the ingredients together to form the perfect bite.

 

Lunch:

  • Salad Dressing:
    • There are thousands of salad dressings out there, but one of our favorites in the world is our Silan and Tahini Vinaigrette. It has a balanced flavor between the nuttiness of sesame, the sweetness of dates, and the acidity of vinegar. Drizzle it on top of a salad with green apples, Craisins, and other textural and tart flavors to please your taste buds. It also tastes incredible with tuna fish, chicken, and salmon!
  • Drizzle on a Tuna Fish Sandwich or Grilled Cheese:
    • Believe it or not, silan is a wonderful complement to canned tuna fish AND grilled cheese! Finish your favorite tahini salad sandwich or grilled cheese off with a drizzle of Soom Silan for that extra flavor.

 

Dinner:

  • Citrus Poached Salmon:
    • Brighten your salmon with citrus flavors and sweetness from Soom Silan! If you’re looking for the easiest salmon preparation, use a drizzle of olive oil, silan, salt and pepper, and cook it. It’s absolutely delicious!
  • Maple Tahini Salmon:
    • Sub in silan for maple syrup for extra yum in this recipe! Be mindful – a little silan goes a long way! You’ll only need between 2-3 tablespoons of silan in place of ¼ cup of maple syrup.
  • Brisket with Tahini & Silan BBQ Sauce:
    • You can make an incredible tahini BBQ sauce to top off your brisket including ingredients like tahini, crushed tomatoes, silan, apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion powder, and chili.

  • Silan Chicken Leg Quarters:
    • Marinating your chicken in silan is finger-kissing good, but if you don’t have too much time, these chicken leg quarters are absolutely delicious! The little kick from the cayenne pepper is so perfect to balance out the sweet and slight saltiness of the sauce.

 

Sides:

  • Roasted Carrots and Parsnips in a Silan and Olive Oil Drizzle:
    • This is such a wonderful component to any fall or winter meal!
  • Brown Sugar and Silan Sweet Potatoes:
    • Believe us, every family member will enjoy the caramel-like flavor of sweet potatoes coated in a dreamy, sticky, sweet sauce consisting of butter, brown sugar, and silan.

 

Dessert:

  • Silan Pecan Pie:
    • For the best pecan pie you’ll ever eat, consider using silan in place of corn syrup, like most recipes call for. Try our recipe and top it off with a tahini whipped cream.

  • Silan & Tahini Banana Bread:
    • This extremely moist and delicate banana bread is exactly what you think of when you think of banana bread. There are layers of flavors and the subtleness of tahini and silan adds extra yum!

Beverages: coffee, tea, cocktails

  • Coffee or Tea: Rather than using cane sugar, honey, or other types of sweetener substitutes, consider adding silan! It will enhance the flavor of either drink and sweeten it to your liking.

  • Cocktails:
    • More and more, we see fruit syrup (including Silan!) incorporated into crafty cocktails by restaurants across the country. Consider adding Silan to your cocktails at home like we did with our MedSummer Night’s Dream Cocktail! This cocktail in particular, which was inspired by a relaxed date night in, reminds you of a beautiful evening along the scenic beaches of the Mediterranean. Do you need another reason to make this cocktail? We didn’t think so.
    • We also whipped up some other beverages with silan including Tequila Mockingbird (tequila, triple sec, silan date syrup, lime, jalapeño) and a Tahini Colada (rum, pineapple juice, tahini, coconut milk, silan date syrup), which was inspired by Chef Jenn Louis of Ray Restaurant.
