It’s funny how time flies, but also goes by so slowly. Certain days, it feels like we only started Soom Foods just yesterday. Other days, it feels like it has been ages! It’s crazy to reflect on the past five years.
The other day I came across a Soom Foods “business plan” draft from October 2011. The “business plan” was barely a plan. It was my ramblings written on “letterhead” with a logo that we commissioned through 99 designs. The following topics were covered: Mission Statement. Products. Goals. Marketing. Finances. Team.
As an example, here were our goals:
- Import Tehina to Philadelphia
- How do you export from Israel?
- How do you import to US? Starting a Food Business
- Find shared kitchen space for handling
- Develop and perfect Soom Foods original mixes
- Find packaging; 32 oz, 16 oz, unique 16 oz, and 1.5 oz squeeze packs
- Compile a list of Farmer’s Markets across the East Coast
I can’t help but chuckle at these because now these goals are all second nature (or completely irrelevant!). But at the time, we literally had no idea how to export from Israel and import to the US. We thought we were going to be filling our own jars of tahini at a shared kitchen space. And Farmers’ markets were the places where we originally connected with our consumers. (Thank you Collingswood! Thank you HeadHouse Square!)
These types of reflections are so important for me because it grounds me back to where we came from. Soom Foods still has a LONG way to go, but it is amazing to witness how much we have grown over the past 5 years.
What also stood out to me from this “business plan” was our mission:
To supply the North American market with authentic Middle Eastern Tehina, Soom Foods original Tehina products, and a network of Tehina based recipes – providing consumers with a new, healthy, and delicious ingredient that can be used as savory or sweet.
This still holds true today!!!
While some things have changed drastically in our business, our mission, vision, and values have remained constant.
Fast forward 7 ½ years since this “business plan”, and 5 years since our first sale, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve you an ingredient that is delicious, nutritious and extremely versatile, and we thank you for joining us on this journey.
