Sharing Soom with Hurricane Harvey Victims

By leveraging the resources of our Company, Soom Foods supported two incredible campaigns to assist Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston.

Julie was in contact with blogger A Dash of Jazz who lives in Houston, and while this blogger didn’t personally experience the overwhelming disaster that Harvey caused, she informed us of many ways we can lend a hand to aid the community with one of them being donating to the Houston Food Bank. Not only did this blogger guide us in that route, but so did Miriam, a woman who we met at the JWE 4th Annual Business Conference in February. Her brother faced the devastating impacts of Harvey firsthand, and when she reached out to us about Hurricane Harvey relief in Houston, we immediately said yes.

Personally, it was difficult for me to “talk tahini” and post beautiful food photography while people were suffering from the repercussions of Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria.  How could we share indulgent, decadent recipes when so many are still struggling to find food to eat and safe water to drink?  Living in a city unscathed, I didn’t know the best way to help.  And unfortunately the overwhelming requests for donations was resulting in decision paralysis.

Thanks to Miriam’s upcoming #FloodEmWithLove campaign, we are able to help by spreading the message about the #FloodEmWithLove t-shirt sales fundraiser through our marketing platforms. And second, by suggesting the Houston Food Bank as a place to donate 1,330 jars of tahini to those in need of non-perishable food items.

Having a business is a humbling outlet to do good in the community, and I hope that our little contribution will make a small difference to those in need.
