Wellness in the Schools (WITS) is a national nonprofit that teaches kids healthy habits so they can learn and live better. The organization partners with school districts to provide nutrition and fitness education, healthy scratch-cooked meals, and active recess periods. This approach improves student outcomes and drives systemic, long-term change, shifting school cultures. Programming has three pillars: Cook for Kids, Coach for Kids, and Green for Kids.
The Cook for Kids program works to feed kids real food. WITS Chefs, trained culinary graduates, work with schools to transform the cafeteria menu, train school staff, and provide nutrition education to students. The Coach for Kids program encourages schools to let kids play to reach the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity. WITS Coaches, trained fitness professionals, work with schools to reinvent recess, train school staff, and provide fitness education to students. And, finally, the Green for Kids program combines gardening and environmental sustainability education in order to get kids green.
Soom Foods has been an incredible partner to Wellness in the Schools. Together, we’ve rolled up our sleeves to expose students to the delicious and nutritious product that is tahini! Some members of the WITS and Soom team did tastings at elementary schools in New Jersey, using tahini to make a delicious salad dressing and chocolate truffle balls (the students thought the truffle balls were as delicious as donuts!). When the pandemic struck, Soom and WITS continued to strengthen their partnership by keeping the community fed, and inspiring people to get in their kitchens to cook a delicious meal.
We’re appreciative of Soom’s help and look forward to working with them for the years to come.
