For the past five years, hummus has become a popular staple on most restaurants’ menus and in homes throughout the country. It’s become a household product thanks to brands like Sabra, Michael Solomonov’s Zahav cookbook, and giving Americans a customizable snack they can eat at any period of the day. This dish is vegan, fairly nutritious, and extremely versatile in flavor and ingredients used. We believe the hummus trend is here to stay for those reasons.
The Rise of Veganism
As you’re most likely aware, veganism is on the rise, especially in the United States. This has led to restaurants incorporating more plant-based offerings on their menus. (Here are our favorite places to eat hummus across the country!) In addition, grocery chains and mom and pop shops are offering hummus and more vegan-inspired snacks! For instance, you can scoop up a variety of hummus products at Whole Foods, or even grab some from their already prepared food section. In addition, local markets have also been selling their own variety like Riverwards Produce in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philly. The role of veganism is definitely playing a role in the success and popularity of hummus. And we believe this is one of the key reasons hummus will be around for a loooong time.
The Nutritious Qualities of Hummus
If you look at the basic ingredients of hummus, you’d typically find tahini, chickpeas, garlic, lemon, and water. All of these products have nutritional benefits to them, especially tahini! Tahini is a great plant-based and dairy-free source of protein, calcium, and iron. In addition, tahini boasts copper, magnesium, and phosphorous, which are all important nutrients for bone and joint health. Tahini can also keep immune systems strong and healthy due to high amounts of zinc, iron, copper, and selenium it contains. The high levels of iron help the flow of oxygen throughout one’s body, which creates energy and prevents fatigue.

Hummus is Extremely Versatile
Hummus, typically made from chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon, and water (as mentioned above) can have different flavor profiles. While we prefer hummus in its traditional form, we love how playful hummus can be. Hummus can take on seasonal flavors or be adapted to include one’s favorite spices in herbs. For instance, in the fall, people make hummus concoctions that include pumpkin, winter squash, or even apples and cinnamon! In the summer, people tend to load avocado, fresh herbs, or roasted red pepper into their recipes. The dip can take on many different forms, but it must always include tahini for proper texture and flavor. Since hummus is customizable to people’s preferences, we have a feeling this dip will continue to be a staple in homes and restaurants.
