What is tahini?
Well… it’s not:
- Tamari (though you wouldn’t be the first person to confuse the two).
- Made from nuts (though many think it’s a nut product).
- Tahiti (though you can fly us out there anytime you’d like to!).
- Hummus (though it is a main ingredient in it).
However, it is the same as tehina; tahini is typically the American spelling for it. It’s also the main ingredient that makes us all swoon in Philadelphia when we have a milkshake from Goldie!
So what exactly IS tahini?
It’s a paste made from sesame seeds – that’s literally it! Soom tahini is a paste made from roasted and pressed White Humera sesame seeds.
Soom tahini is unbelievably delicious, nutritious, and versatile!
And it’s not just for hummus. We use it to make salad dressings, sauce for sesame noodles, buffalo dip for veggies, and pizza sauce for vegan pizza; substitute it for the oil in our chocolate chip banana bread, cookies, brownies, pies, and cakes; and even use it to create a vegan mac and “cheese,” and mix it with honey to create our “PB&J” sandwiches. You can also top it off on crostinis, soups, and grain bowls. The options are seriously endless.
Are you hungry yet? Good because you should be.
Not only is it delicious and versatile, but it’s also super good for you! Sesame is a superfood and is rich in minerals including iron, potassium, and magnesium. It’s one of the best ways to get your calcium (especially for our vegan friends out there!). It’s also high in Vitamin E and the B vitamins and has a hefty amount of protein per two tablespoons. And it is unsaturated fat…the good kind. 😉
