Sesame was cultivated in India as far back as 5000 BC. By 2000 BC, the seeds were traded throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, where they were used for rituals and medicinal purposes. They were also eaten as condiments, added to bread and baked goods, and of course, ground into sesame tahini.
Today, sesame is just as valuable as it was thousands of years ago and can be used for much more than bagels, burger buns, and sushi rolls. By weight, this small, but mighty seed packs more protein than almonds and lentils. And when pressed into tahini, sesame is creamy, calcium-rich, yet dairy free. And that’s not all! Sesame is rich in antioxidants and in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Sesame is also high in Vitamin C and filled with essential minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.
