Soom Silan: What Is It?

Delicious. Nutritious. Versatile. These are some of the key product attributes of tahini. It’s a delicious ingredient that is loaded with essential nutrients, and it can be used in sweet and savory dishes, from a salad dressing to a sauce, to a substitute for oil to simply pairing it with honey or jam… (until we discovered silan). The opportunities are truly endless!

Throughout our time talking tahini, we discovered silan. Silan, or date syrup, is also delicious, nutritious and versatile, not to mention it’s an incredible complement to tahini! And thus, we decided to add it to our offerings with the hopes of making this the new product staple in professional and home kitchens in addition to tahini.

What is Soom Silan?

Soom Silan is a rich and complex, all-natural date syrup made from 100% steamed and pressed dates that were cultivated throughout Israel. Similar to our tahini, our silan is made from just one agricultural product unlike some other date syrups on the market! Soom Silan consists of 80-90% Medjool dates, and the rest are a blend of dates from the Jordan Valley.

Health Benefits:

As far as the nutritious qualities go, it’s an exciting and lower-sugar alternative to honey, maple syrup, molasses, and refined sugar. Not only does it have a lower sugar count and lower glycemic index rating, but it is loaded with essential nutrients, too! To name a few, Soom Silan is packed with magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, iron, fiber, Vitamins A, B, C, and D. According to Charlotte Press, RD, date syrup has less sugar per gram than maple syrup, honey, and refined sugar and more than 8 times the fiber of those other sweeteners!

Dietary Restrictions:

Soom Silan is gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, kosher, vegan, and paleo, so people with dietary restrictions can use this as a substitute to either honey, maple syrup, or other natural and refined sugars when trying to sweeten something! Since there’s a shortage in agave, you can also use silan as an alternative.

Texture & Flavor:

Soom Silan is silky, light, and smooth in texture, and rich, complex, and sweet in flavor. As an all-natural date syrup, its viscosity lies in between that of a maple syrup and honey, and isn’t sticky on the tongue the way some of its competitors are.

Uses:

There are endless ways to use silan, and that’s what makes this product so fun! (rhyme intended.) It’s a great substitute for maple syrup, honey, or other natural sweeteners. And similarly to tahini, you can use it in sweet and savory dishes. You can use it in sauces or glazes or as a drizzle on proteins and vegetables, as a sweetener and a rich component in baked goods, and as a topping for ice cream, yogurt, and smoothies. Plus, Soom Silan is also delicious mixed into cocktails, coffee, and tea! Read this blog post that delves into many of its various uses!
